Xi and Modi are ‘partners not rivals' in
If you're trying to show you're a force
of stability in a changing global order,
you couldn't have asked for a better
parade of leaders touching down in China
today. Russian President Vladimir Putin
made his second red carpet appearance
this summer. The last one courtesy of
Trump's warm welcome in Alaska just
weeks ago. Helpful validation for the
Chinese leader Xi Jinping's long support
of Putin. And with his Russian bear by
his side, he then told India's leader
feeling the sting of Trump's tariffs
that with the world transforming, the
Chinese dragon and Indian elephant
should come together. A bear, a dragon,
and an elephant walk into a room and the
punchline is Xi Jinping's perfect photo
op. along with a guest list of leaders
including Iran, Bellarus, North Korea,
and Turkey. It's no surprise this
gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation
Council is being dubbed the access of
upheaval summit.
She is now reconnecting with Narendra
Modi less than a week after US tariffs
doubled on Indian goods to 50% because
of India's refusal to stop buying
Russian oil that helps fund their war in
Ukraine.
>> 2.8 billion.
>> It's Mod's first visit to China since
2018 following years of strained
relations mostly over border disputes.
The Indian leader told Shei he's
committed to improving ties and resuming
flights between the two nations. So are
Trump's tariffs now pushing India closer
to China?
>> It's not about tariffs. It is about uh
in Trump's uh foreign policy in his
second term. India's role of a strategic
partner is no longer there. If you see
his foreign policy now when you don't
have a strategic role then there is and
you know India has problems with China.
We have a border problem. There are
troops on both sides and President Putin
is a real guaranter of peace between
India and China.
>> The Shanghai Cooperation Organization
was created as a countermeasure to
western alliances. And on the other side
of the axis when it comes to Ukraine
Putin is the man of peace.
The European War Party stays on trend.
They don't calm down. This is in stark
contrast to the approach of President
Putin and US President Trump whose
efforts to bring the process to a
peaceful course are difficult to
overestimate.
And while the Bellarussian leader
Alexander Lucenko is meeting with his
Chinese counterpart, closer to his home,
the EU chief Ursula Vondelion is
parading down Poland's enhanced border
with Bellarus in a show of solidarity
against Russian aggression.
